The Global Evaluation Initiative (GEI) launched its Hands-On Internship Program for 2024-2025, building on the success of previous editions. The program, now in its third year, offers young and emerging evaluators (YEEs) from developing countries a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of monitoring and evaluation (M&E). With a focus on hands-on learning, mentorship, and skills development, the internship aims to equip the next generation of evaluators to meet the growing challenges in their field.

This year, the program offers nine internship placements across several regions. Interns will be based in the Centers for Learning on Evaluation and Results for Anglophone Africa (CLEAR-AA), Francophone Africa (CLEAR-FA), Lusophone Africa and Brazil (CLEAR-LAB), Pakistan and Central Asia (CLEAR-PCA), and South Asia (CLEAR-SA). In addition, two interns will be placed within the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL) in Mexico and the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Policy (MIDEPLAN) in Costa Rica. The internship will run for six months, beginning in October 2024.

Launched in 2022, the GEI internship program was designed in collaboration with EvalYouth and other members of GEI’s Training and Professional Development Working Group. It has since developed into an important initiative for building M&E capacity in developing countries. The program continues to evolve, offering new opportunities to contribute to national M&E systems and improve local capacities.

“Access to career opportunities and professional development is often limited for young evaluators,” said Anna Aghumian, evaluation capacity building lead at GEI. “This program addresses that gap by providing practical experience and mentorship, fostering a new generation of M&E leaders.”

Participants in the internship will benefit from comprehensive training, exposure to M&E system development, and mentorship from experienced professionals. The program’s practical, hands-on approach aligns with GEI’s broader mission of strengthening national M&E systems, promoting innovation, and expanding professional networks.
