Evaluation in Conflict Contexts: Experiences of the UNDP Independent Evaluation Office

About the Event
Fragility and violence have become the biggest obstacles to the achievement of the SDGs. From shrinking civic space, to climate insecurity, to more intense and protracted violent conflict, to unprecedented levels of forced migration and displacement, and acute humanitarian crises, the risks to achieving results through development interventions are great. Equally, there are significant challenges to carrying out evaluations in fragile and violent contexts. Yet, evaluation is especially critical in these contexts - where opportunities to reflect are scare due to the operating environment - to facilitate learning and accountability, in order to continue to promote deeper, more inclusive, conflict-sensitive equitable development.
The UNDP Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) has recently carried out country programme evaluations in conflict-affected countries such in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Various lessons have been learned - from practical logistics and planning to methodology and data collection issues – through these experiences.
As part of the gLocal Evaluation Week, the UNDP IEO is organizing a webinar to share its experiences and invites evaluators and evaluation offices to join in and share their learning as well.

She has 25 years of experience in international development policy, evaluation, and research.
