Using Observational Data to Strengthen Impact Evaluations

Painel

About the Event

The most common way to collect data has been to use structured quantitative tools with quantitative tools that are relatively easy to administer at scale. Despite these obvious advantages, structured primary surveys often face two distinct challenges, (i) Social desirability bias, and (ii) Hawthorne effect.

An alternative to using structured administered surveys is systematic observations, where enumerators are trained to observe specific dimensions and record in a systematic manner. These observations can be undertaken as bystanders, as non-participants, or as participant observations.

In the session, the panelists will discuss the use of observational data in impact evaluations and in what context it can and cannot be used.
